Hear what James D. Sasser has to say to Lauren about the development of CUBAMOR and his Carolina roots.

With a performance career spanning Broadway, off-Broadway, and stages around the world, James D. Sasser has been involved in the development of dozens of new musical works on both sides of the table as an actor, writer, and producer. He has worked with organizations ranging from Riverdance to Sundance, Jesus Christ Superstar to Forbidden Broadway, to TheatreWorks, The O’Neill, Playwrights Horizons, Manhattan Theatre Club, New Dramatists, Goodspeed Opera, The Vineyard, NYU-Tisch GMTWP, and many more. He is also the bookwriter for the new musical Looking For Christmas with country music legend Clint Black, which had its world premiere at the Old Globe in San Diego in 2018, and is currently adapting a 21st Century version of the film that made Marlene Dietrich an international superstar Der Blaue Engel entitled The Blue Angel Projekt. He is also working on his first album of songs outside of the theatre. James is a Frank and Eva Buck Scholar, has received grants for development of new work from the Puffin Foundation, the NYU Office of Globalization, and is a multiple Pan Arts Arty Award winner from the North Bay Area of California.

CUBAMOR is a modern retelling of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, where love transcends political and social differences via traditional Afro-Cuban Orisha music/dance and hip hop, which had its developmental premiere at the Village Theatre’s Beta Series, was an official selection of NAMT (2014), and TheatreWorks Silicon Valley’s New Works Festival (2013), and was first developed at NYU-GMWTP, where Charles Vincent Burwell and James met.
