Today we are taking a field trip to the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee. This place, this shrine of music, is so much more than cowboy boots and Cadillacs. It’s a tribute to all the jazz, blues and bluegrass artists, who are interwoven into country music’s origin story. And nestled in the 5th Avenue lobby of this incredible building, is another not-to-be-missed hidden gem called Hatch Show Print, a historic letterpress print shop that is as much a part of Americana as country music itself. So why talk about Hatch here on this podcast? Well, it turns out that there’s a thread of southern hospitality that ties this small print shop in the heart of Nashville to our very own Durham Performing Arts Center.
As mentioned in this episode, the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) has arranged a special behind-the-scenes tour for RDU on Stage listeners. To sign up for this tour and see the Hatch Print Show poster collection as well as the wall tags left behind by every artist and touring production that has come through DPAC for over a decade, click here.
About the Guest
Celene Aubry is the Associate Director at Hatch Show Print, one of America’s oldest surviving letterpress show poster and design shops. In addition to overseeing the staff and operation of a vibrant 140 year old letterpress print shop, Aubry is also guiding the development of additional Hatch Show Print programs and activities that leverage a classroom and gallery—two spaces that are still relatively new to the shop—while still carrying on the shop’s tradition of preservation through production, making posters for the customers whenever time allows. And, when the day’s work is done, Celene enjoys pursuing her quest to bring together the two outmoded processes of letterpress printmaking and hand-printed photographs.
